This week we had plenty of After Effects fun – and pain – with Stockholm based agency Perfect Fools. Here’s the result of my first attempt at creative motion graphics.

  2. Workshop on human-centered design with IDEO

One of the highlights of the past month at Hyper Island was the three day-workshop with IDEO, a design and innovation consultancy. Fredrik Aidehag & Juho Parviainen from the Munich and London offices of IDEO shared their methods of facilitating creative processes and IDEO’s approach to human centered design.

    IDEO workshop

For three days, we worked with different local business (an Eye Doctor in our case) to help them improve their service to the customers.  In this process we made a journey through these four stages:
    1. Observation & inquiry
    2. Storytelling and synthesis
    3. Brainstorming
    4. Prototyping

We started out with going the place and observing the  customer bahavior and  interaction with the staff. We talked to the employees and customers of the store, trying to gain insights about the business, customer needs and identify areas of opportunity.

Analyzing our observations, we identified the major touch points in customer interaction and created several customer stories representing typical visitors of the Eye Doctor. Then we moved on to brainstorm and develop ideas on how we could make the store more inviting, make people visit it more often etc. We generated great amounts of ideas and then used gained insights to identify the ones most suitable to the task. We ended up with three possible solutions and picked one to prototype. This stage, “quick-and-dirty prototyping” was where we had the most fun. It was also when the solution became real and tangible – or as close to reality you could get at that point.

It was a great learning experience to put IDEO’o methodology into action. It was especially interesting to see how the observations you made while studying the business later turned into insights that gave birth to ideas, and, finally, resulted in a solution.
